Let's see if it's Sunday it must be where? I guess we woke up in Dubuque IA. Reed was a little tough to get out of bed so we didn't get going till after 9. Drove though the University of Dubuque and Loras University. Reed was not so impressed as he getting somewhat jaded but I liked the U and both campuses were very nice. About 10 we got out of town headed toward Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter MN. Got there about 5 hours later and accidentally met up with one of the coaches who gave us a nice tour. Gave him a hype sheet and a cd for his trouble. Campus was beautiful and they had great facilities. Reed was impressed this time. Hit the trail for Minneapolis and Georgia's Kafe 421 for dinner. Georgia was my first college girlfriend and we've kept in touch over the years, usually when I come to Minneapolis. She and her husband will be out for a few hours but she invited us to stay the night and we'll go over there after 9. Reed leaves tomorrow from MSP for IPOP. Then on to SD for me.

Took Sally to Subway for breakfast. She's never been for breakfast before and it's our favorite place. Afterwards took off for Iowa. Made Davenport without much except for a hard rain storm between Chicago and Davenport. Looked at St Ambros U. Not much going on as it's a Saturday but they did have a girls basketball game going on in the gym. Also discovered that I should have taken my Lactaid pills before I ate all those donuts. Took of for Dubuque going on the scenic route along the river. Cool in places but probably should have taken the express route. Dubuque was having some kind of thing so most of the Motels were booked finally found the Motel 6 had some openings. Ate Mexican and now I'm washing clothes. Manana.

Drove up to Capital U today. Beautiful and compact campus in a suburb of Columbus called Bexley. Got the tour from Greg and then met with the athletic director Steve Brunig for about a half an hour. After met with an admissions counselor and then went to lunch. Reed likes the school fine but it may be a bit expensive though. Reviews on the net proved unfounded however as the campus was gorgeous. We'll undoubtedly apply and then see what happens finance wise. One thing I didn't quite get the same feeling of amity that I got from EMU. Going to meet here at 4 with an old friend from Glacier National Park and then Sally Baughman, Annie Dame's mom emailed me to see if we were going to come visit her. Since we're only 3 hours away I said "what about tonight.?" We'll see what happens. Check for updates. Saw Lisa Miller for about a half hour and then Reed and I took off to visit Sally. Got here at 8:30 and of course Sally hadn't looked at her emails and wasn't home. We waited around and she got home at 9:30 and we had "old home week: Day is done and the jet lag has been pretty good today.

Pretty dull day. Got up kinda late and didn't really get going until 9am. Bid farewell to a great time at EMU and headed north to eventually get close to Columbus Ohio. Along the way looked quickly at the West Virginia Institute of Technology, (Very interesting setting in a little town on a picturesque river) Marshall U. (sprawling campus in Huntington WV). Reed didn't really care for either. Tomorrow we'll go look at Capital University near Columbus. Small college that had Reed's ideal curriculum but they are expensive and seem to get bad press on the web. Tonight we're at a motel in Chillicothe, OH. UPDATE: Ate at THE DOCK ON WATER in Chillicothe after it was recommended. Great food and reasonably priced.

Hooray Slept almost till daybreak today so finally overcoming the jet lag to some extent. Great day. Had meetings with the soccer coach, athletic director, basketball coach, and one of the music teachers here at Eastern Mennonite University. Also had a campus tour with Emily, the senior admissions helper who had been so nice in the emails. And then Lauren, one of the admissions officers, bought us lunch. And yes, to all my friends who know me only too well, I did offer. Finally at 3 there was a pick-up game of basketball in the gym and Reed got to play with some of their present and former players and played well. Not only is the campus beautiful. But we were treated exceptionally well by what is obviously a really first class organization. Now if we can only afford it. That being said we're only 1 week into our six week odyssey and there's still a lot to see. Warner and EMU, however, were two of the colleges we were most anxious to see. Here's a pic of the campus.

Ok So we had a good time at Annie's house yesterday though the rest of her family wasn't there. I think I was asleep before my head hit the pillow, but got up bright and early this morning (such is jet lag) and we bid our farewells and were gone by 7:30. By 2:30 we were rolling into Harrisonburg VA to see Eastern Mennonite University. Beautiful campus. They also had a basketball camp going on in a huge gym. Eventually found Emily, the girl I'd been emailing about a visit. She gave us tomorrow's schedule and all kinds of information. While Reed stayed at the guest house to e friends I checked out the library. Met Jennifer, the librarian, and got lots of info about a very diverse campus and community. After, Reed and I went to Subway and had dinner. Pretty much ready to hit the sack though the accommodations are a bit cramped. Until tomorrow.

Can't talk too much as we're staying overnight with Annie Dame who I first met on Guam when she was 4. Had dinner and lots of great conversation. And a picture of course.

We decided to go to the Kennedy Space Center today. The $50 each for admission sure was worth it! It was pretty amazing learning about NASA. The shear size of the rockets used for space exploration is pretty spectacular. I really wish their Atlantis exhibit was open, but sadly it wont open until next week. Oh well...as my dad said today, I can always go back with my kid (Haha). Anyways, a lot driving ahead of us tomorrow. Had a good time in Florida! On to the next one. -Reed

Not a lot excitement today. Got Reed to the camp about 10. Left him to play and checked back every couple hours. By 2:30 his legs were sore and bothering him so we went home. Decided to forego the camp tomorrow and head to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. Just checked their web page and the tour is $50 although I can get in for $46 (the limited joy of being old). When I wasn't checking on Reed I was using the town library and looking for yard sales. Found that Lake Wales has a great indoor Flea Market with lots of cool stuff. Reed needs a nap and then dinner.

Camp was interesting. A lot of kids and parents/coaches. Sometimes it was hard to tell which is which. They needed a facility the size of the field house at UOG. Anyway I tried to go take a nap in the car but gave up and went in just in time to see Reed play for 3 or 4 minutes. He had a good pass and also a basket but also a turnover. When his team finished (they got whopped) he was done so we headed back to the motel. Shower and food and we'll be in bed. Tomorrow we don't have to be there till 10.
Got up early to come to the basketball camp at one of reed's possible schools, Warner University in Lake Wales FL. Leaving the motel I found out how out of it I was as I new I had to drive north to get on I4 but didn't realize I was going south until figured out the sun does not rise in the west. Got to Warner a little before 8. Talked to Admissions. One of the Admissions people Pairris was particularly helpful. Reed filled out an admissions form. Gave Pairris a cd. She said it was the first time any prospective student had done that. After talked to the soccer coach Fabio. Pairris had also lined us up to take a tour of a facility they call HEART. It's a place to teach students about 3rd world problems, etc. Pretty cool place. We had a good time and gave them a cd. Matthew McConaughey's twin brother works there. After went to downtown Lake Wales, visited some thrift stores, hit the town Library where we met a librarian who long ago lived in Rapid City, had some lunch and back to Warner. Library was open so we hit there. Still a few hours until the camp starts. Mom sent Reed a scan of the PDN article. Here it is:

Reed got an article in the PDN--- Big show business dreams: Teen invited to iPop, hopes to make it in Hollywood Jun. 20, 2013 7:10 PM | Comments Crooner: Local performer Reed Meyer is heading to Hollywood to chase his show-business dreams. Courtesy Belta Perez Written by Lacee A.C. Martinez Pacific Daily News FILED UNDER Lifestyle ON THE NET • Sgal on Youtube: www.youtube.com/user/tylertanaka94?feature=watch http://officialsgal.bandcamp.com • iPop: www.ipopla.com Fresh out of high school, 18-year-old Reed Meyer has big college plans, hoping for a basketball scholarship somewhere on the East Coast. Before that, he has other plans that could take him to a whole different side of the continent -- Hollywood. Next month, Meyer will be in Los Angeles, representing the island in front of bigwigs in the entertainment industry, hoping to get discovered. The singer, model and actor has been invited to iPop, the International Presentation of Performers, where he'll be among thousands of other young talents putting themselves in front of agents and casting directors from big magazines and networks. Born and raised on Guam, Meyer also was an interscholastic athlete during his high school years at St. John's School. "It always kept me out of trouble," he says. He also played soccer and basketball through high school and currently is in search of a college, which will offer him a basketball scholarship. Meyer has a passion for performing. He honed his acting skills in high school and at John Robert Powers, which is sponsoring him. "I'm still getting used to modeling, and acting is something I got into in a class," he says. "I really enjoyed it and it really turned me on to it, but singing, I've been doing for quite a while." He began singing when he was about 10. He played the guitar and sang in his school's talent show. "I was really into the Red Hot Chili Peppers back then, so I'd sing a lot of that," he says. Today, Meyer is part crooner, performing songs in the style of Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra. If you're not familiar with his jazz performances, you might know Meyer through more contemporary music. He's also part of the rap trio Sgal, which has several music videos up on its YouTube page. "I'm really starting to get into mixing and producing and I hope to study that when I get into college," he says. If Meyer makes it through the audition, he could possibly garner work in Hollywood or a recording contract. "The show business -- it's always a cool thing to be involved in," he says. "But I'm going out there to do my best and see what happens."
We are in Orlando. Or Kissimmee at the Seralago Motel. Only problem we had was trying to find the motel as it seems like all the roads around here have two and three names. Finally got close enough and asked enough people to find it. 4 nights for under $150. Thank you Hotwire. Tomorrow down to Warner U for basketball camp. After almost 24 hours on airplanes, all we can say is goodnight!!!

Friday, June 14, 2013

OK  So we're set for Florida from June 20 - 23 and heading out to South Carolina early Monday morning but still haven't heard from friend in Spartanburg.  Have heard from the people at Eastern Mennonite U however and they have everything going for us on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Reed and Belta Perez were on KUAM today talking about the IPOP contests that Reed's going to the first week in July.

Monday, June 10, 2013

Thus starts our blog for our college search trip in the summer of 2013.  We'll be leaving June 20 and back August 3, but there's a lot going on and who knows what's going to happen.
As of right now we're flying into Orlando where we'll pick up a car.  Reed is scheduled to go to a basketball camp fro June 21 - 23.  Also planned is the IPOP singing/acting/modeling contest in LA for the first week in July.  Other than that we have some ideas but nothing set in stone.
